The sounds of summer are ringing through Sanibel, and if you look around, you’ll notice the island has a refreshing new look compared to last year.
It’s the kind of different that’s full of hope and renewal.
“Right now, we really need the support of the locals, especially after Hurricane Ian,” said Stephanie Stallbomb of Adventures in Paradise.
This positive change is marked by numerous “Open” signs.
“Over 80% of our restaurants and retail shops have reopened. That’s great news,” said John Lai of the Sanibel-Captiva Chamber of Commerce. “However, only about 25% of our hotel rooms are available.”
“Some people are surprised, saying, ‘I thought there’d be more open,’ while others exclaim, ‘There’s so much open!’” said Melissa Donahu, owner of Island Pizza.
With renovations complete and doors wide open, businesses are eager to welcome locals during the off-season.
“It was great to see tourists start to come back. However, there’s still a shortage of accommodations on the island,” Donahu added.
Davidson shared, “It’s a trickle-down effect on the entire local economy. In recent months, and in the coming months, we’ve seen many more properties reopening.”
Whether it’s a day trip to the beach followed by pizza or a weekend stay at the Shell Museum, businesses are inviting locals to visit.
The Summer of San-Cap campaign, run by the Sanibel Captiva Chamber of Commerce, will continue until August, with participating businesses offering special deals to attract visitors.
