Chico’s Reopens on Sanibel Island, a Symbol of Community Resilience

Sanibel Island’s fashion heart, Chico’s, has returned to its roots! The beloved boutique, founded in 1983 with treasures gleaned from exotic travels, has reopened its doors at Periwinkle Place, ready to weave its island magic once again.

Having been an integral part of Southwest Florida for four decades, the reopening of Chico’s original store carries a profound significance. It stands as a symbol of the community’s resilience in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian, one of the worst storms in U.S. history. The ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, Jan. 11 marked a momentous occasion, complete with the unveiling of a new black and bronze plaque paying tribute to the store’s rich history.

Reflecting on the recovery efforts post-Hurricane Ian, Marketing Senior Vice President Leana Less shared, “As Chico’s reflects on the recovery efforts since Hurricane Ian struck in September of 2022, we recall the devastation, hurt, and hopelessness that washed over the Southwest Florida community within the blink of an eye.”

Chico’s corporate headquarters in Fort Myers played a pivotal role in the recovery, transforming into a hub for over 1,000 essential workers within 24 hours of the storm. This included teams from the American Red Cross Disaster Relief and Power and Light, who utilized the space for two months to restore power and infrastructure.

In response to the impact on its associates, Chico’s swiftly organized recovery services, including an Employee Disaster Relief Fund and mental health prioritization through group wellness sessions. Leana Less emphasized, “As devastating as the storm was, it gave us an opportunity to show up for each other in a meaningful way.”

The brand also launched a program allowing customers to contribute their loyalty points to the Red Cross, with over 4,500 customers generously donating nearly 5 million points.

Celebrating the triumph over adversity, Less expressed pride in the resiliency of customers, employees, and brands. Following the reopening of three top stores in Naples last June, the reopening of the original Sanibel store is a significant milestone.

The renovated store boasts a modern coastal aesthetic, featuring an open floor plan, clear sight-lines, and spacious merchandise displays for a welcoming and user-friendly shopping experience. The grand staircase, adorned with painted millwork, leads to an intimate Soma shop-in-shop with a dedicated fitting area, completing the transformation of this cherished space.

SANIBEL, Fla. — Breaking new ground, The Moorings Resort, a condominium-style establishment, has become the pioneer in resuming operations on Sanibel Island. General Manager Kari Cordisco expressed her exhilaration about the reopening, emphasizing the substantial efforts invested to achieve this milestone.

The Moorings Resort on Sanibel Island, the first of its kind to bounce back from extensive damages, has made remarkable progress with a recovery investment exceeding $20 million. Concurrently, the island’s largest resort, Sundial, is undergoing renovations and anticipates reopening parts of its facilities within the next four months.

SANIBEL, Fla. — The Moorings Resort, a distinctive condominium-style retreat, has taken the lead as the first of its kind to resume operations on Sanibel Island.

Reflecting on this pivotal moment, Kari Cordisco, the General Manager of the resort, shared, “It’s an amazing feeling,” underscoring the concerted efforts undertaken to reach this stage.

This unique resort, blending individual ownership with hotel-like amenities, has made 62 of its 122 rooms available for booking. The journey to reopening involved a substantial financial investment, as Cordisco pointed out, stating, “The recovery and the rebuild, we’re looking at more than $20 million.”

Not far away, Sundial, the island’s largest resort, is making strides toward reopening and is now accepting reservations for the month of August.

General Manager Becky Miller highlighted the comprehensive upgrades in progress, stating, “It’s going to be everything new, gorgeous, with new swimming pools and all new amenities.”

The resort aims to reopen a portion of its facilities within four months, featuring five restaurants, tennis and pickleball courts, and a fitness center. Notably, the restaurants will be open to the public.

Despite these positive developments, the overall recovery of Sanibel Island’s hospitality industry is an ongoing process. According to the Sanibel Chamber of Commerce, currently, only about 13% of the island’s rooms are available for guests. The expectation is that this number will double throughout the year and eventually reach 75% by 2026.

Portion of Island Inn Road temporarily closed

The city of Sanibel reported that Island Inn Road, from the eastern gate to the mid-road cul-de-sac, will be closed on Mondays through Fridays to motorists, pedestrians and cyclists until further notice.

Why the closure? The city is using a section of Island Inn Road as a temporary staging area for trucks delivering sand as part of the ongoing Hurricane Ian Beach Recovery & Resilience Project. Due to the heavy truck traffic, it’s unsafe for pedestrians, cyclists, and personal vehicles to mix with the heavy machinery beyond the marked gate.

Truck access and alternative routes: Trucks will access the staging area via Tarpon Bay Road. Please be aware of increased traffic in this area.

Limited access for residents: Once the staging area is no longer needed, the road will be reopened to pedestrians and cyclists. The previously established limited access for authorized motorists will also be reinstated.

Stay informed: We understand this closure may cause inconvenience, and we appreciate your patience and cooperation. For the latest updates on the beach project and road closure, please visit the city website at www.mysanibel.com

Refuge announces upcoming Roving Ranger debut

As the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel ventures into a new year dedicated to conservation and education, the community outreach team is gearing up to introduce its latest initiative — the Roving Ranger — set to debut by mid-February.

Supervisory Refuge Ranger Toni Westland shared, “Building on the success of our WoW (Wildlife on Wheels) mobile classroom, we identified the need for a more compact community-outreach vehicle. Various organizations and events consistently invite the refuge to participate in festivals and educational days, but we required a smaller, more accessible vehicle to make this feasible. Thus, the concept of the Roving Ranger emerged — a refuge-on-wheels comparable in size to a food truck.”

Marking a groundbreaking move within the national refuge system, comprising nearly 600 refuges, the Roving Ranger, compact and easily deployable, will traverse libraries, churches, parks, and events across Lee and Collier counties. Its vibrant, nature-themed exterior is designed to capture attention, while outdoor activities cater to visitors of all ages. Refuge educators will engage with visitors through a side window, as well as informational tables and exhibits outside the vehicle. The Roving Ranger will serve as a hub for tours and various activities, featuring a selfie station on its back side adorned with refuge creatures like manatees, roseate spoonbills, and other birds.

“Our objective is to highlight the significance of our natural world and the marvels found at the refuge and in the local area, fostering stewards for our wildlife and the essential land and water they depend on,” Westland emphasized. “Scheduling for the Roving Ranger has already commenced.”

Expressing gratitude to generous donors for realizing the refuge’s dream of the Roving Ranger, Ann-Marie Wildman, Executive Director of “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society-Friends of the Refuge, the project’s funding and support organization, said, “We anticipate this initiative to kickstart a thrilling and successful year, marking the refuge’s full resurgence and the fulfillment of its mission to extend the conservation ethic beyond refuge and island boundaries into the broader community.”

For more details on supporting the Roving Ranger and its programs, please contact Ann-Marie Wildman at 239-789-8991 or wildman@dingdarlingsociety.org

Sanibel Causeway Restoration Update

The City of Sanibel received the following update from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) regarding the completion of roadwork on the Sanibel Causeway:

Sanibel Causeway Back in Business: All Lanes Open!
Good news, Sanibel! As of January 5th, ALL TRAVEL LANES on the Sanibel Causeway are officially open to traffic. We know navigating the island has been a challenge since Hurricane Ian, so we’re thrilled to report this major milestone in the restoration process.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Permanent lanes: You can now ditch the detour and cruise along the newly restored permanent lanes. Remember, though, the speed limit is still reduced to 20 MPH for everyone’s safety.
  • Westbound merge: Pay attention – the westbound merge lane is now located west of the toll plaza. Be cautious and extra patient.
  • Ongoing work: Don’t be surprised if you see crews and equipment buzzing around – they’re still removing debris and materials from the temporary lanes.

Island recovery: Many oversized vehicles are crossing the causeway to assist with recovery efforts on the island. Please be patient as travel may be slower than usual. Bicyclists are encouraged to utilize another mode of transportation to travel the causeway and pedestrians are not permitted on the Sanibel Causeway.

MOTORISTS ARE REMINDED TO OBEY THE POSTED SPEED LIMIT OF 20 MPH. Please use caution and watch for workers and construction vehicles entering and leaving the roadway. For further questions, please contact Jennifer Dorning by email at Jennifer.Dorning@dot.state.fl.us or by phone at (239) 338-7723. Please visit www.swflroads.com/SanibelCauseway for additional information.
