The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) reported a successful hatching this week. This nest, the first documented on the islands for the 2024 season, was laid by a leatherback sea turtle – a rare sight on Sanibel’s beaches!
This marks the first leatherback nest on Sanibel in four years and signifies the start of hatching season for loggerhead nests on Sanibel and Captiva. SCCF biologists and volunteers documented 40 hatchlings emerging from a total of 113 eggs.
Here’s a summary of the nest counts as of July 2nd:
- Loggerhead nests: 646
- Emerged loggerhead hatchlings: 243
- Leatherback nest: 1
- Emerged leatherback hatchlings: 40
(SCCF clarifies that the total nest counts include both hatched and lost nests)
How You Can Help
The public plays a vital role in protecting nesting sea turtles and their hatchlings. Here are some ways you can help keep our beaches safe:
- Turn off lights: Turn off flashlights and beachfront lights after 9 pm. Artificial lights can disorient hatchlings and deter nesting females.
- Keep beaches clear: Fill in holes, flatten sandcastles, and remove beach furniture before nightfall. These obstacles can hinder hatchlings and nesting turtles.
- Dispose of trash properly: Food scraps and trash can attract predators that harm sea turtles.
Report Any Concerns
If you see any issues related to nests, hatchlings, adult sea turtles, or lighting/furniture compliance, contact the SCCF Sea Turtle Hotline at 978-728-3663.
