The iconic Sanibel Outlets mall, located at the corner of McGregor Boulevard and Summerlin Road, has remained in ruins for over two years. However, new plans promise to breathe life back into the site with an ambitious transformation into a modern, sustainable community called Calusa Grande.
A Vision of Innovation and Sustainability
The development group Fort Myers Future aims to revolutionize the property with state-of-the-art features. Newly unveiled 3D renderings showcase a futuristic design that will include:
- Two 20-story towers of energy-efficient apartments, with 200 units (40%) dedicated to workforce housing.
- A 20,000-square-foot performing arts center.
- A 200-room hotel.
- A public park and dining establishments.
Architect and master planner Thomas Spiegelhalter highlights the project’s groundbreaking nature:
“This has never been built in Florida, a structure this size. It’s 15 feet above sea level, resilient, off the grid, carbon neutral, and self-powered.”
The development will integrate sustainable features inspired by the region’s history, including shell sediment ground techniques influenced by the Calusa Indians, rooftop gardens, and abundant green spaces.
Mixed Community Reactions
While some lament the limited retail space in the new plans, others see this project as a significant economic and social boost for the area.
Tammy Clements, a Fort Myers resident, appreciates the inclusion of workforce housing:
“It’s really hard to start over again, so I think it’s going to be really good for everybody.”
On the other hand, concerns remain about infrastructure and traffic management. Izzy Armstrong, another local, noted:
“It’s going to suck with the whole traffic situation, but it’ll help with creating jobs, and I think the sense of community will be good.”
Construction Timeline and Next Steps
Deconstruction of the Sanibel Outlets, initially slated for completion in January, has been delayed as workers salvage materials for reuse in Calusa Grande. Pending county approval, construction is expected to begin early next year.
Developers have also hinted at the possibility of a few beloved restaurants from the original outlets making a comeback, ensuring the community retains a touch of nostalgia amid its futuristic design.
