The Island Water Association (IWA) has announced the commencement of infrastructure replacement at its Reverse Osmosis (RO) facility, addressing the damage caused by Hurricane Ian.
This construction project will temporarily reduce the water utility’s treatment capacity. To mitigate this impact, the timing has been strategically planned to align with the anticipated seasonal rains and off-peak residential water demands.
To support these efforts, IWA reminds members to adhere to the city of Sanibel and Lee County’s year-round irrigation restrictions. Proper irrigation practices will help manage water demands during this period.
Irrigation Schedules:
Sanibel:
- Even-numbered addresses: Tuesdays and Fridays
- Odd-numbered addresses: Mondays and Thursdays
Captiva (Lee County):
- Even-numbered addresses: Thursdays and Sundays
- Odd-numbered addresses: Wednesdays and Saturdays
Irrigation is allowed from midnight to 9 a.m. and/or 5 p.m. to midnight. No irrigation is permitted between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on any day.
IWA anticipates the treatment plant will be back to full capacity by early July.
“Continued adherence to local irrigation rules is crucial for protecting Southwest Florida’s vital freshwater resources and reducing peak demand stress on the potable water system,” said IWA. “Please ensure your irrigation systems are set to operate no more than two days per week according to the permitted schedule for your property.”
