A challenging year tested Captiva’s resilience. Hurricane Ian’s fury left destruction and ongoing recovery, but the island’s spirit remained strong. The Captiva Community Panel, with your vital support, stood firm in protecting what you love.
The fight for Captiva’s future continues. Long-established rules regarding building height, density, and intensity of use are threatened, jeopardizing Captiva’s treasured low-rise, low-density development. Increased density, taller buildings, and more traffic would irrevocably alter the island, straining natural resources and evacuation routes.
The Captiva Community Panel needs your continued support to tackle this critical challenge. Your donation will empower the Panel to:
- Communicate: Disseminating information about county actions and rallying community opposition against threats to Captiva’s future has been crucial.
- Collaborate: The Panel has partnered with island organizations and the “Protect Captiva” coalition to advocate for responsible development.
- Clarify: Countering misinformation from the county and developer with factual explanations fosters informed community engagement.
While addressing development concerns, the Panel has remained a vital source for community initiatives:
- Ian Recovery: Panel meetings provided a platform for residents to seek aid and navigate the long road to restoration.
- Infrastructure Investment: Collaborations with Sanibel on sewer expansion, county and state on flood management, and ongoing efforts to control the iguana population ensure a healthy and safe community.
- Building Community: Monthly meetings and regular updates create an open forum for questions, concerns, and information, fostering transparency and dispelling rumors.
As a small non-profit, the Captiva Community Panel relies on your support in three ways:
- Engagement: Attend meetings, spread awareness, and contribute to the vibrant island community.
- Involvement: Lend your expertise and feedback on projects and issues that matter to you.
- Funding: Your financial contributions provide resources, fund research, support grant applications, and maintain the Panel’s modest infrastructure.
Many of you have generously supported the Panel, and we are deeply grateful. Please consider continuing your support to ensure our community’s concerns are heard. Every contribution makes a difference.
