RSW Travelers Urged to Plan Ahead as Terminal Access Changes Begin

Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) is preparing for a significant shift in terminal access as part of its ongoing terminal expansion project. Starting Wednesday at 8 p.m., travelers should expect changes that will impact how they enter and navigate the airport, particularly those heading to Concourses B, C, and D.

What’s Changing?

Key sections of the main terminal—including the area that previously served as a primary entrance to Concourses B and C—will be closed off. This closure also includes retail and dining spaces such as Nathan’s Famous and Quiznos located within that corridor.

Going forward, travelers needing to reach Concourses B and C will need to use the east atrium entrance. For those flying out of Concourse D, access will now be available only through the west atrium, located inside Door 5.

What Travelers Should Know

RSW officials are advising passengers to allow extra time for arrival and check-in, as navigation around the terminal may be less intuitive during construction.

Frequent flyer Bruce Ross, who typically parks near the now-closed section for convenience, shared his reaction:

“I think what I’ll have to do is just adapt… I’ll start parking further down and figure it out—it’s going to be ugly at first,” he said.

Another long-time traveler, Eric Payne, expressed mixed feelings.

“There’s no character here. There’s no pizzazz. It’s like a utility room with gates,” he said, but added that expansion could bring much-needed improvements to the overall experience.

Looking Ahead

While the immediate changes may cause some disruption, airport officials hope the expansion will ultimately make RSW more efficient, attractive, and traveler-friendly, comparable to top-tier international airports.

Until then, passengers are reminded to check signage, follow airport personnel guidance, and plan their arrival with these new access routes in mind.

Travel Tip:
Give yourself extra time before your flight—especially if you are unfamiliar with the updated terminal layout or traveling with children, seniors, or luggage.

For the latest updates and terminal maps, visit the official RSW Airport website or contact airport information services.

SCUCC to Host “J.S. Bach in Song and Dance” – A Unique Musical Performance on Sanibel

The Sanibel Congregational United Church of Christ (SCUCC) will present a special performance titled “J.S. Bach in Song and Dance” on Saturday, April 27 at 2:00 PM, as part of its Music at SCUCC series. The event will take place at the church, located at 2050 Periwinkle Way on Sanibel Island.

This unique program brings together classical music, vocal performance, and ballet to celebrate the works of composer Johann Sebastian Bach.

Dr. Ronald Dorian, an accomplished organist, will perform several of Bach’s major compositions. He will be joined by guest vocalists Janet Ortenzo and Ariane Schoellner, who will interpret some of Bach’s most lyrical and expressive vocal pieces.

The Florida Early Music Series Baroque Orchestra will perform Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 3, featuring the well-known Air in G. The ensemble will be conducted by Dr. Mackenzie Albert, who serves as both the Director of Music at SCUCC and Artistic Director of the Florida Early Music Festival.

Adding a dynamic visual element to the program, dancers Katalina Bustamante, Violet Schwartz, and Anabelle Troyer from SWFL Ballet will perform under the direction of Edwin Navarro, Artistic Director of the ballet company. Their choreography will offer a graceful interpretation of the music through dance.

A reception with the artists will follow the performance, giving attendees a chance to meet and speak with the musicians and dancers.

The event is open to the public, and all are welcome to attend. A free will offering will be accepted at the door to support future programming.

Flying Soon? Big Changes Are Taking Off – Here’s What You Need to Know!

Get ready for some important updates if you’re planning to fly domestically within the U.S. soon! Changes are on the horizon, impacting everything from the ID you need right now to how you might board planes in the future.

Heads Up: REAL ID Deadline is Almost Here!

Mark your calendars: Starting May 7, 2025, the federal government will fully enforce the REAL ID Act for domestic air travel. This means all passengers aged 18 and older will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card, or another acceptable form of ID (like a U.S. passport), to pass through airport security.

  • What is a REAL ID? Stemming from the REAL ID Act of 2005, enacted to enhance security after 9/11, these IDs meet specific federal standards. You can easily spot a compliant card by looking for a star emblem, usually in the upper right corner.
  • What if I Don’t Have One? Attempting to fly without a REAL ID or another valid alternative after May 7, 2025, could lead to significant delays or even being denied boarding by the TSA.
  • Check Your License: The good news for residents of states like Florida is that REAL ID-compliant licenses have been issued for years (since 2010 in Florida’s case). Check your license now for the star!
  • Need to Upgrade? If your license isn’t compliant, you’ll need to visit your local DMV or licensing office. Be prepared to bring documents proving your legal residence (like a birth certificate or unexpired passport), your Social Security card, and proof of any legal name changes (like a marriage certificate or court order).

Don’t wait until the last minute – check your ID today!

Looking Ahead: The Future is Facial Recognition
While REAL ID is the immediate change, even bigger transformations are being planned for air travel in the coming years. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is championing a global shift towards facial recognition technology.

Imagine this: Instead of fumbling for boarding passes and IDs at multiple checkpoints, your face becomes your passport.

  • How it Works: You’d use your smartphone to create a secure Digital Travel Credential, linking your passport data. At the airport, facial recognition systems at security, bag drop, and boarding gates would verify your identity seamlessly.
  • Why the Change? The goals are twofold: create a smoother, faster travel experience and significantly boost security. Biometric data is unique, making it harder to commit identity fraud and aiding efforts against human trafficking.
  • Already Happening: This isn’t just science fiction. Airlines like Delta and United are already implementing facial recognition technology in various parts of the travel process.

Described as potentially the “most significant transformation in aviation in more than 50 years,” this technology aims to replace traditional check-ins and paper documents entirely.

Stay Prepared
Air travel is constantly evolving. Ensure you’re prepared for the immediate REAL ID requirement by May 7, 2025, and keep an eye out for the exciting (and potentially very convenient) facial recognition technology making its way to airports in the near future. Safe travels!

Lee County Enacts Burn Ban Due to Dry Conditions

On April 15, the Lee County Commission issued a burn ban for all unincorporated areas of Lee County and participating municipalities due to increasingly dry weather conditions throughout Southwest Florida.

The ban prohibits all outdoor burning ignition sources, including:

  • Campfires

  • Bonfires

  • Trash or debris burning

Use of grills for food preparation is permitted and not affected by the ban. However, county officials are urging residents to exercise caution and be proactive in preventing potential wildfires.

Why the Ban Was Issued

The decision is based on the Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI), a scale used to measure soil dryness. On April 14, Lee County’s average index value reached 612 out of 800, exceeding the threshold of 600 required to enact the ban. The ban is also supported by both the Lee County Fire Chiefs’ Association and the Florida Forest Service.

Exemptions

This burn ban does not apply to:

  • Prescribed burns authorized by the Florida Forest Service

  • Public fireworks displays with proper permits

  • Retail fireworks sales authorized by state law

The burn ban is enforced under a State of Local Emergency declared by the Lee County Commission.

Wildfire Safety Resources

Residents are encouraged to review fire safety resources from the Florida Forest Service:

Stay Informed

County officials will continue to monitor drought conditions and will lift the ban when appropriate. For updates, visit:

For questions or additional information, contact Lee County Government via their website or public information office.
