As October arrives on the barrier islands, the community is trading its traditional coastal blues for a vibrant shade of pink. Pink-Tober is officially here, spearheaded by the incredible SanCap Pink Project—a local non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring that no one in our community faces a breast cancer journey alone.
Founded in 2020 by breast cancer survivor Mary Bondurant, what began in 2012 as a simple effort to bring a mobile mammogram bus to the Sanibel Fire Station has blossomed into a month-long island-wide movement. Today, the organization provides vital financial assistance to uninsured and underinsured individuals experiencing the profound financial hardships often associated with cancer treatments.
At the LeAneSuarezGroup, we believe that the true luxury of living on Sanibel and Captiva lies in the strength and compassion of our neighbors. Supporting grassroots organizations like the SanCap Pink Project reflects the heartfelt, caring nature of our sanctuary islands.
“One in five individuals will be touched with some kind of cancer in their lifetime. If we can be here to just ease anyone’s journey however we can — a card, gift, paying something during that time — we are here and we are not going away.”
— Mary Bondurant, Founder of the SanCap Pink Project

Easing the Burden: How the Funds Are Used
Over the years, the SanCap Pink Project has injected more than $30,000 directly into the local community. Rather than focusing solely on medical bills, the organization bridges the gap of “financial toxicity” by helping patients with everyday living expenses.
Grants help cover lost wages, transportation to treatments, household electric bills, insurance deductibles, and prescription copays. Assistance is available to anyone facing a cancer-related hardship; applicants simply fill out a form detailing their current needs, regardless of their standard income brackets.
Monthly Cancer Support Group
In addition to financial assistance, the non-profit recently launched a monthly support group. The group meets on the first Thursday of every month at 5:30 PM in the Sanibel Public Library conference room. It is a safe, welcoming space for patients, survivors, caregivers, and family members to share their journeys.
