Annual Ride of Silence 2026: Honoring Cyclists on Sanibel Island

Participating since 2008, Sanibel joins hundreds of cities worldwide for this event, held annually on the third Wednesday of May at 7 p.m.. The ride was originally founded in 2003 in Dallas, Texas, following the death of cyclist Larry Schwartz. Today, it serves as a powerful reminder for both motorists and cyclists to exercise caution and mutual respect.

Event Logistics & Participation

The event is free and open to the public, regardless of cycling experience level.

  • When: May 20 at 7 p.m. (Participants should arrive by 6:45 p.m. for introductions and history).

  • Where: Starts and ends at Sanibel Community Park, 2231 Periwinkle Way.

  • Requirements: All participants must wear a helmet; non-club members will be required to sign a waiver.

  • Supplies: Billy’s Bikes will provide water, some safety vests, and a limited number of spare helmets.

The Route: A 4.5-Mile Silent Journey

The ride follows a 4.5-mile loop along the city’s Shared Use Path. True to its name, the event is a deliberately slow and silent ride. The Sanibel Police Department will assist with traffic control to ensure a safe environment for all attendees.

Route Path:

  1. Head east on Periwinkle Way.

  2. Turn south on Casa Ybel Road.

  3. Turn onto West Gulf Drive.

  4. Travel north on Tarpon Bay Road back to Periwinkle Way.

  5. Return east to Sanibel Community Park.

Why We Ride: Safety and Awareness

“We participate to bring the focus to the safety of cyclists and motorists while cycling,” says Sanibel Bicycle Club President Jim Meyer. Beyond honoring those lost, the ride encourages the community to pay closer attention to their surroundings while driving or riding. Organizers also request that participants refrain from cell phone usage during the event to maintain the solemn atmosphere.

At the LeAneSUAREZGroup, we deeply value the lifestyle provided by Sanibel’s 25+ miles of world-class shared-use paths. Supporting events like the Annual Ride of Silence 2026 is essential to preserving the safety and serenity of our island for every resident and visitor.
