The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) has shared exciting news — the first loggerhead hatchlings of the 2025 season emerged on June 26! This milestone marks the halfway point of the sea turtle nesting season on Sanibel and Captiva Islands.

As of June 30, SCCF has documented a total of 614 sea turtle nests:

  • 467 on Sanibel

  • 147 on Captiva

Among them, 10 are green sea turtle nests, while the rest belong to loggerhead turtles. So far, 124 loggerhead hatchlings have safely made their journey to the Gulf waters.

Fort Myers Mighty Mussels Gear Up for Biggest Night of the Season with July 4 Fireworks

For the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels, Independence Day is more than just baseball and fireworks — it’s one of the most profitable weekends of the year, expected to bring in approximately 10% of the team’s annual revenue.

With July 4 landing on a Friday in 2025, it aligns perfectly with the team’s recurring “Fireworks Fridays” promotion — a calendar staple that draws thousands of fans to Hammond Stadium throughout the season. The team has 11 postgame fireworks shows scheduled for 2025, but this Fourth of July display will be the largest and most elaborate yet.

A Big Investment in a Big Show

“It’s a huge deal to really knock this weekend out of the park,” said John Martin, managing partner of Kaufy Baseball, which owns the team.

To deliver a Major League-level fireworks show, the Mighty Mussels are partnering once again with Pyrotecnico Fireworks Inc., a national company with offices in Jupiter and Tampa. Their long-term relationship — built through 10 additional bookings during the season — gave the team priority access on one of the busiest fireworks nights of the year.

“Nobody is doing more fireworks during a calendar year than the Mighty Mussels,” Martin noted. “That leverage lets us negotiate better rates and secure premium show nights like July 4.”

The Independence Day show is set to be double the size of their usual postgame displays, with over $20,000 worth of fireworks lighting up the sky — compared to the $10,000 typically spent on regular nights.

“This is the biggest fireworks show in the history of Hammond Stadium,” Martin said. “In terms of duration and intensity, it’s about double what you would normally see — and our regular shows are no slouch.”

The ROI of Fireworks

While the exact return on investment isn’t disclosed, Martin emphasized the clear value fireworks bring to minor league baseball marketing.

“You don’t have to be a brilliant marketer to lean into Fireworks Fridays,” he said. “They work. People love them. Families look forward to them. Fireworks fill the stands.”

So pivotal is this night that Kaufy Baseball insures the event against rain, covering both fireworks and staffing expenses. The policy activates based on rainfall levels during key hours — an essential safeguard when thousands of dollars are on the line.

Weather Watch

As of July 2, the weather forecast for Friday evening was uncertain.

“Scattered storms are in the forecast,” said WINK News Chief Meteorologist Matt Devitt, “but with a little luck, hopefully those storms will avoid the ballpark.”

With strong attendance expected, fireworks prepped, and contingency plans in place, the Mighty Mussels are ready to deliver a Fourth of July experience that blends America’s pastime with a sky-high celebration — weather permitting.

Keylime Bistro Reopens on Captiva Island, Celebrated with Chamber Ribbon-Cutting

After weathering a series of challenges—including permitting delays and the impact of Hurricanes Ian, Helene, and Milton—Keylime Bistro on Captiva Island officially reopened its doors on May 24. To celebrate this milestone, the SanCap Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 27, honoring the resilience and determination behind one of Captiva’s most beloved dining spots.

A Symbol of Island Resilience

Chamber President and CEO John Lai praised the efforts of owner Sandy Stilwell Youngquist, calling her achievement a symbol of perseverance and community leadership.

“We are so proud of owner Sandy Stilwell Youngquist for arriving at this peak achievement at the flagship property in her kingdom of Captiva hospitality,” said Lai. “She has set a remarkable example for fellow island businesses to work hard, believe, and endure. Congratulations!”

Youngquist echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the important role the chamber has played throughout the island’s recovery.

“The chamber has been invaluable in keeping the business community together and celebrating each opening of businesses,” she said. “We’ve all been through a lot, and I appreciate having the chamber as our voice to the community.”

Supporting the Community After the Storm

In the aftermath of Hurricane Ian in September 2022, Youngquist and her team were among the first to step in and support Captiva’s recovery efforts. She personally ran three boats to transport residents and workers back to the island, helping jumpstart the rebuilding process.

She even loaned her Jeep and S Car Go Trolley—a whimsical tram-like vehicle—to island firefighters who were without transportation.

“It was pretty funny to see the first responders running around the island in my Jeep that looks like a snail,” she recalled.

Growth Beyond Captiva

Despite the setbacks, Youngquist has continued to expand the Keylime Bistro brand. She opened a second location in Boca Grande, which had been in development prior to the hurricanes and reopened just last month after damage repairs. A third Keylime Bistro is currently under construction at Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) and is expected to open by November.

In addition to the bistro, Youngquist has reopened several other Captiva staples, including:

  • RC Otter’s Island Eats

  • Cantina Captiva

  • Sunshine Seafood Café

  • Portions of the Captiva Island Inn, including two houses and guest rooms

  • Latte Da Coffee Shop, expected to reopen this summer

  • New inn buildings, with construction starting later this year

Visit Keylime Bistro

Located at 11509 Andy Rosse Lane, Keylime Bistro is once again serving up its signature key lime pie and tropical-inspired cuisine that has made it a local and visitor favorite.

Estero Council Approves $2.2M for Maintenance Facility at Future Sports Park

At its regular meeting on July 2, the Village of Estero Council approved a contract amendment totaling $2,224,726 with Chris-Tel Construction to build a new maintenance building for the upcoming 100-acre Estero sports park. The funding also covers the demolition of the existing facility.

This move aligns with the master plan for the park, which was approved in January and is scheduled for completion in 2026. Village staff recommended the updated contract to ensure the project remains on track and on schedule.

A Community Vision for Recreation

The future park is one of the village’s most ambitious recreation projects, aiming to offer expansive sports and activity areas for residents of all ages. While specific features are still being developed, the maintenance building is a critical early component in preparing the site for larger infrastructure and amenities.

Resident Feedback: Call for a Splash Pad

During the meeting’s public comment session, a local resident shared a petition with 600 signatures urging the council to consider adding a splash pad to the park — a water-based feature geared toward young children.

Although the idea gained community interest, the Council previously opted not to include a splash pad in the park’s master plan. Instead, planners have reserved space for an area potentially dedicated to food trucks and event-related vendors, which they believe could better serve a broader range of park visitors.

What’s Next?

Construction of the maintenance building will begin soon, keeping the development of the new park in motion. As plans progress, the Village of Estero is expected to continue seeking community input and balancing infrastructure needs with recreational features that reflect residents’ priorities.

For updates on the park’s development or upcoming meetings, visit the official village website at www.estero-fl.gov.

Florida Eliminates Statewide Sales Tax on Commercial Leases Starting Oct. 1

In a major win for Florida businesses, Governor Ron DeSantis has officially eliminated the state’s longstanding sales tax on commercial leases, effective October 1, 2025. Signed into law on June 30 via House Bill 7031, this marks the end of a tax that has been in place since 1969.

What Is Changing?

Florida businesses previously paid a 2% sales tax on rent or lease payments for commercial spaces — whether for office buildings, strip malls, warehouses, or retail storefronts. This tax, known as the business rent tax, also included any additional local surtaxes imposed by counties.

Starting October 1, 2025, that 2% tax will be fully eliminated, along with any optional county surtaxes.

Why This Matters

Florida was the only state to charge a statewide sales tax on commercial leases, often seen as a disadvantage for companies considering expansion or relocation. Industry groups, including the Florida Chamber of Commerce, Florida Realtors, and Florida TaxWatch, have long pushed for its repeal.

“This is going to make us much more competitive when recruiting or starting new businesses,” said Gary Tasman, CEO of Cushman & Wakefield Commercial Property Southwest Florida.

Impact for Tenants and Landlords

Though landlords collected the tax, tenants bore the cost — effectively increasing their rent. With this tax removed:

  • Businesses will see a reduction in monthly rental costs

  • Office spaces may become more competitive, especially in sectors still recovering post-pandemic

  • Landlords may have an easier time leasing long-vacant spaces

“Even a 2% savings can help make a property more attractive,” said Stan Stouder, founding partner at CRE Consultants.

A Look Back

The tax rate has gradually dropped from 6% in 2017 to 2% in 2024, tied to economic performance and the recovery of Florida’s Unemployment Compensation Trust Fund. Despite rate cuts, revenue from the tax increased from $1.86 billion in 2017 to $2.64 billion in FY 2024, driven by population growth and a strong economy.

A Florida Realtors study estimates that removing the tax will generate $6 in economic activity for every $1 cut in rent tax revenue.

Who’s Affected?

The tax applied to commercial leases, including:

  • Office space

  • Retail and strip mall leases

  • Warehouses and self-storage units

  • Parking, docking, and tie-down spaces

  • Convention and meeting rooms

  • Licenses for vending or newspaper machines

It did not apply to:

  • Residential properties

  • Agricultural land

  • Nonprofit organizations

  • Government agency leases

What’s Next?

The law goes into full effect on October 1, 2025, providing Florida businesses with a new advantage in operating costs and leasing flexibility.
