You don’t need a snorkel or a lab coat to explore the deepest mysteries of marine biology this season. The Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum & Aquarium has announced the continuation of its highly popular online lecture series, running live throughout the summer and fall of 2026.
Broadcast live via Zoom, these educational sessions are completely free and open to the public, making world-class marine science accessible to island residents and armchair oceanographers worldwide.
At the LeAneSuarezGroup, we love highlighting the phenomenal educational programming that makes Sanibel Island a globally recognized hub for conservation and natural science. Having an institution like the National Shell Museum right down the road adds immense cultural value to our local community and real estate lifestyle.
In a nutshell: The Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum & Aquarium is hosting a series of free, live Zoom lectures featuring top marine biologists from July through October. While admission is free, online registration is strictly required to secure a streaming link.

JULY 22 CUTTLEFISH BIOLOGY PROFILE
[ INTELLIGENCE ] ──► Holds the title of "World's Most Intelligent Invertebrate."
[ CARDIO/BLOOD ] ──► Equipped with three distinct hearts and vibrant blue blood.
[ NEURO-ARMOR ] ──► Skin-changing camouflage controlled directly by the brain.
The presentation will break down how these fascinating creatures alter their color patterns in mere milliseconds to hide in plain sight or communicate with other cuttlefish. By studying how their complex brains direct skin changes, researchers gain rare insights into evolutionary biology and the inner workings of neurology.
Fall Lecture Schedule & Benefactors
The intellectual exploration continues well past the summer months with two additional heavy-hitting scientific presentations scheduled for the autumn:
-
September 16: “Solar-Powered Sea Slugs” featuring Michael Middlebrooks, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Biology at the University of Tampa.
-
October 14: “Picking Up the Pieces: Tracking Elusive Predators on Mollusks” led by Matthew Ajemian, Ph.D., Associate Research Professor at Florida Atlantic University.
This incredible community asset is made possible through dedicated private philanthropy and institutional backing, with primary support provided by the Sam and Francis Bailey Clean Water Education Center, Leslie Fleischner, and Joan and Don Sherman.
