Sanibel and Captiva Sea Turtles Nest Count Reaches 372 Despite Heavy Rains

As of June 12, the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) has documented a total of 372 sea turtle nests on Sanibel and Captiva since April 24. This includes 371 loggerhead nests and one leatherback nest.

Despite heavy rains and flooding from the wet season’s first tropical system, there is no immediate threat to the nests. Sea turtle eggs are permeable, so a bit of extra water is usually not a problem and may even have a beneficial cooling effect.

The SCCF explains that the most significant threats to incubating eggs from storms include prolonged inundation and beach erosion, which can wash out nests or alter their conditions. Fortunately, sea turtles lay multiple nests each season at different times, increasing the chances of successful hatchlings even if some nests are lost.

The public can assist in protecting nesting females and hatchlings by:

  • Turning off beach-front lights after dark
  • Filling in holes on the beach
  • Flattening sandcastles
  • Removing beach furniture and trash

If you need to report a new nest or issues with nests, turtles, beach lighting, or beach furniture, please call the SCCF Sea Turtle Hotline at 978-728-3663.

Living with Alligators on Sanibel Island

Sanibel Island’s beauty extends beyond its beaches. Over 2,200 acres of freshwater wetlands provide habitat for a healthy alligator population. This means you might encounter these fascinating creatures while exploring the island’s natural side.

Alligators are part of a healthy ecosystem, but it’s important to remember they are wild animals. To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone, here are some key points to remember:

  • Alligator Activity: Alligators are most active during warmer months, from April onwards. This is when they feed more, establish territories, and mate. Be extra aware of your surroundings near freshwater during this time.
  • Safety Tips:
    • Always supervise children closely around water.
    • Swim only in designated areas during daylight hours.
    • Never approach or feed alligators. Feeding is illegal and dangerous, as it makes them associate people with food.
    • Keep pets on leashes and away from the water’s edge.
    • Dispose of fish scraps properly in designated bins.
    • Admire alligators from a safe distance.

Remember: Respecting wildlife is vital for a harmonious coexistence.

If you see a nuisance alligator or witness someone feeding them, contact the Sanibel Police Department immediately at (239) 472-3111.

Have questions about alligators or other wildlife? Contact the Sanibel Natural Resources Department at (239) 472-3700 or send an email to sandnr@mysanibel.com.

By following these tips, you can safely enjoy Sanibel’s natural beauty and appreciate the island’s alligator population as an important part of its ecosystem.

Businesses Luring Back Locals on Sanibel

The sounds of summer are ringing through Sanibel, and if you look around, you’ll notice the island has a refreshing new look compared to last year.

It’s the kind of different that’s full of hope and renewal.

“Right now, we really need the support of the locals, especially after Hurricane Ian,” said Stephanie Stallbomb of Adventures in Paradise.

This positive change is marked by numerous “Open” signs.

“Over 80% of our restaurants and retail shops have reopened. That’s great news,” said John Lai of the Sanibel-Captiva Chamber of Commerce. “However, only about 25% of our hotel rooms are available.”

“Some people are surprised, saying, ‘I thought there’d be more open,’ while others exclaim, ‘There’s so much open!’” said Melissa Donahu, owner of Island Pizza.

With renovations complete and doors wide open, businesses are eager to welcome locals during the off-season.

“It was great to see tourists start to come back. However, there’s still a shortage of accommodations on the island,” Donahu added.

Davidson shared, “It’s a trickle-down effect on the entire local economy. In recent months, and in the coming months, we’ve seen many more properties reopening.”

Whether it’s a day trip to the beach followed by pizza or a weekend stay at the Shell Museum, businesses are inviting locals to visit.

The Summer of San-Cap campaign, run by the Sanibel Captiva Chamber of Commerce, will continue until August, with participating businesses offering special deals to attract visitors.

SCCF: Local Water Temperatures Top 90°F

The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) has reported that in the last 10 days, maximum water temperatures have exceeded 90°F at several River, Estuary, and Coastal Observing Network (RECON) sites within the Caloosahatchee Estuary and the Gulf of Mexico.

SCCF manages an extensive network of water quality sensors throughout the Caloosahatchee River and Estuary. These sensors provide real-time data to the public, measuring critical parameters such as temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and chlorophyll, collectively known as RECON.

Each week, the data from these stations are compiled and published in the SCCF’s Caloosahatchee Conditions Report. This is a collaborative effort between SCCF’s Marine Lab and the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge.

“This data is crucial for informing stakeholders about local water quality conditions and for providing science-based recommendations for managing the broader Caloosahatchee system,” explained Policy Associate Allie Pecenka. “The Caloosahatchee Conditions Report displays these parameters, including the lowest and highest values recorded over the week.”

Pecenka noted that while such high water temperatures are typical during the summer, an early-season spike may indicate a broader trend of rising water temperatures in the Caloosahatchee and Gulf. Elevated water temperatures can increase the susceptibility of the river and estuary to harmful algal blooms, negatively impact aquatic life, and intensify storms in the Gulf and Atlantic.

IWA Begins Infrastructure Replacement at RO Facility

The Island Water Association (IWA) has announced the commencement of infrastructure replacement at its Reverse Osmosis (RO) facility, addressing the damage caused by Hurricane Ian.

This construction project will temporarily reduce the water utility’s treatment capacity. To mitigate this impact, the timing has been strategically planned to align with the anticipated seasonal rains and off-peak residential water demands.

IWA RO REPAIRS AND IRRIGATION

To support these efforts, IWA reminds members to adhere to the city of Sanibel and Lee County’s year-round irrigation restrictions. Proper irrigation practices will help manage water demands during this period.

Irrigation Schedules:

Sanibel:

  • Even-numbered addresses: Tuesdays and Fridays
  • Odd-numbered addresses: Mondays and Thursdays

Captiva (Lee County):

  • Even-numbered addresses: Thursdays and Sundays
  • Odd-numbered addresses: Wednesdays and Saturdays

Irrigation is allowed from midnight to 9 a.m. and/or 5 p.m. to midnight. No irrigation is permitted between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on any day.

IWA anticipates the treatment plant will be back to full capacity by early July.

“Continued adherence to local irrigation rules is crucial for protecting Southwest Florida’s vital freshwater resources and reducing peak demand stress on the potable water system,” said IWA. “Please ensure your irrigation systems are set to operate no more than two days per week according to the permitted schedule for your property.”

For more information, contact the IWA Administrative Office at 239-472-1502.
