It’s a fantastic way for the whole family to experience the islands’ incredible ecosystem.

A Community That Loves Canines

What truly sets Sanibel and Captiva apart is the pet-friendly culture. This isn’t just a policy; it’s a way of life. Turning Bathrooms Into Personal Spas: Elevating Wellness at Home

Homeowners are transforming their bathrooms into serene retreats, incorporating spa-like features such as filtration systems and aromatherapy to create daily spaces dedicated to relaxation and wellness.

As stress levels continue to rise, the demand for health-focused bathroom upgrades is becoming more of a necessity than a luxury. These wellness-inspired bathrooms are evolving from utilitarian spaces into personal sanctuaries, blending high-end features with purposeful design to promote mental and physical restoration.

With the integration of features like sensory lighting, filtration systems, and smart controls, homeowners are reflecting a cultural shift towards spaces that prioritize well-being as part of everyday life. Here’s how updated bathrooms are turning homes into restorative oases.

A Spa-Like Experience at Home

In 2025, homeowners and buyers are looking for spaces that combine advanced technology with a sense of comfort. This trend merges cutting-edge features, such as whole-home batteries and EV chargers, with nostalgic touches like cozy libraries, vintage fixtures, and timeless designs.

“Technology has allowed homeowners to live more sustainably and affordably, which is becoming a growing priority for buyers,” says Amanda Pendleton, Zillow’s home trends expert. “Energy-efficient, climate-resilient features are increasingly sought-after as homeowners look to save costs, including insurance.”

This movement towards functional and emotionally enriching spaces has reached every corner of the home—including the bathroom. Rather than being just a place to freshen up, the bathroom has become an intentional sanctuary that supports both mental and physical recovery, providing a space to pause, reset, and recharge.

Bill Darcy, global president and CEO of NKBA, explains, “Design will remain focused on wellness, incorporating spa-like elements, intentional lighting, natural colors, and minimal maintenance. The aim is to create spaces where homeowners can relax, rejuvenate, and emerge feeling their best.” This sentiment encapsulates how wellness is being integrated as the foundation of bathroom design, creating an environment that connects ambiance with emotional well-being.

Key Features Bringing Spa Vibes to Bathrooms

It’s the little touches that create a spa-like atmosphere, and in a wellness-enhanced bathroom, each detail is crafted to support your comfort and health.

Luxury Spa Showers
Luxury spa showers are redefining how people experience their daily routines. These showers are no longer just for a quick rinse but offer a fully immersive escape that prioritizes comfort, control, and mood. Multi-jet body sprays mimic massage-like pressure, while rainfall showerheads provide a gentle, continuous stream. Features like chromotherapy lighting and steam transform an ordinary shower into a personalized wellness experience. Smart systems allow adjustments in temperature, pressure, and ambiance, setting the emotional tone for your day.

Filtered Water Systems
While not the flashiest upgrade, filtered water systems provide some of the most tangible benefits. By removing harsh chemicals like chlorine and heavy metals from showerheads and taps, these systems protect your skin and hair from irritants. The result? Softer skin, healthier hair, and a cleaner feel after every rinse. Some advanced filters even contain vitamin C or mineral cartridges, delivering added skin-nourishing benefits for a more luxurious shower experience.

Aromatherapy & Sensory Design
Aromatherapy and sensory design elevate the bathroom into a space that nurtures both body and mind. Scents like lavender, eucalyptus, and citrus activate the brain’s limbic system, which governs emotions and memory. When paired with soothing textures and calming color schemes, these sensory elements help turn a simple routine into a restorative ritual, making your bathroom a sanctuary that supports your mood and emotional well-being.

Design Trends That Promote Calm

Wellness is not just about adding features; it’s about creating a space that feels nurturing. The textures, colors, lighting, and layout all contribute to how you unwind. These design trends are about establishing a sense of tranquility that lasts long after you’ve left the room.

Biophilic Design
Biophilic design transforms the bathroom from a sterile space into a vibrant, living environment that supports well-being. Incorporating natural elements—like potted plants, moss walls, or wood-look tiles—helps bring the outdoors inside, promoting relaxation and stress relief. These natural elements thrive in the bathroom’s humid environment, offering low-maintenance options like peace lilies, pothos, and ferns that also improve air quality.

Layered Lighting & Chromotherapy
Lighting is crucial to setting the right atmosphere in the bathroom. Gone are the days of harsh overhead lights; today’s designs focus on layered lighting that includes task lighting around mirrors, ambient ceiling lighting, and accent lighting for areas like tubs or shelves. Chromotherapy lighting systems go further by using color to enhance mental wellness, with blue for calm, red for energy, and green for balance. The result is a bathroom that adapts to your emotional state, helping to promote relaxation and rejuvenation.

Heated Floors & Towel Racks
Radiant floor heating and heated towel racks add a quiet layer of comfort, making daily routines feel more luxurious. Radiant floors gently warm tiles from below, ensuring a cozy bathroom temperature year-round. Heated towel racks offer the same comforting warmth, speeding up towel drying and reducing moisture in the air. These small yet impactful features elevate your bathroom experience, making every moment feel like a personal retreat.

Compact Saunas & Wet Rooms
Compact saunas and wet rooms are quickly becoming desirable bathroom features. A 15-minute session in a sauna can ease muscle tension, improve circulation, and support immune health. Wet rooms, where the entire bathroom functions as an open shower space, enhance the spa-like atmosphere and simplify maintenance, offering a spacious, easy-to-clean design.

Making It Happen at Home

Wellness-enhanced bathrooms are redefining how homes serve their residents. Whether through a small upgrade or a full renovation, more homeowners are turning their daily routines into restorative rituals. As these spaces continue to evolve, they show that personal wellness doesn’t require a weekend retreat—it can begin with a single, thoughtful change in the comfort of your own home.

A Bit of Bailey’s Opens on Sanibel After Hurricane Ian

A Bit of Bailey’s, a new store operated by the same family behind Bailey’s General Store, has officially opened on Sanibel Island—nearly three years after Hurricane Ian devastated the original store. Located on Rabbit Road, the new store features an elevated storefront and a revamped layout, symbolizing a fresh chapter for the Johnson family’s longstanding presence on the island.

Richard Johnson shared that the reopening of the store represents the strong support from both family and community. He emphasized that Bailey’s has always been about more than just providing groceries—it has been a place of normalcy and connection for island residents.

The Johnson family plans to break ground on the original Bailey’s General Store later this year, according to WINK News.

DeSantis Pushes for Census Update to Increase Florida’s Congressional Seats

Governor Ron DeSantis and State Attorney General James Uthmeier are advocating for a new census count, arguing that Florida was undercounted by nearly 700,000 residents in the 2020 Census. They believe an updated count could result in at least one additional congressional seat for the state, prompting the Florida Legislature to redraw district maps ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Support for their request is backed by recent Census Bureau data and the state’s population growth of nearly 2 million people since 2019. Currently, Florida holds 28 U.S. House seats, but state leaders contend that the existing congressional map does not accurately reflect the state’s recent growth.

In response, state officials have sent a formal letter to the Census Bureau and the Commerce Department, requesting a recount to more accurately represent Florida’s population.

Application Portal Now Open for Wind Inspections and Grants

FISH of Sanibel-Captiva has announced that the My Safe FL Home (MSFH) application portal is now open, offering Florida homeowners the opportunity to apply for wind mitigation inspections and grants.

The Florida Legislature has allocated $280 million for the 2025-26 fiscal year to fund new wind-mitigation inspections and grants under the MSFH Program. These grants are exclusively for wind mitigation upgrades.

Funding is limited, and grants will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Eligible homeowners are encouraged to submit their applications as early as possible to increase their chances of receiving funding.

About the MSFH Program

Re-established during the 2022 special session of the Legislature, the MSFH Program provides financial assistance to eligible Florida homeowners to retrofit and strengthen their homes against storm damage. The program has two key components, both managed by the Florida Department of Financial Services:

Free Hurricane Mitigation Inspection: Homeowners can receive a free, no-obligation inspection that assesses the current hurricane-resistant features of their home. The inspection will also recommend improvements to further strengthen the home against future hurricanes.

Hurricane Mitigation Grant: Homeowners can apply for a grant to cover the costs of the recommended improvements, enhancing the home’s hurricane resistance. These upgrades may also help homeowners qualify for discounts on their home insurance premiums.

Matching Grants

The MSFH Program Matching Grant operates on a reimbursement basis. Homeowners must have their grant application approved before proceeding with construction work. Payment requests are submitted at the end of the project via a draw request, accompanied by a paid-in-full invoice. If approved, homeowners will be reimbursed for two-thirds of the total project cost, up to a maximum of $10,000, subject to legislative appropriation.

Low-Income Grants

Low-income homeowners who meet the program’s other requirements are eligible for a low-income grant of up to $10,000. These homeowners are not required to provide a matching amount and do not need to submit a paid-in-full invoice. They are also exempt from the insured value requirement.

Ribbon-Cutting Marks Soft Opening of Punta Rassa Boat Ramp

The public was invited to join government officials on August 21 at 10 a.m. for the official ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the soft reopening of Lee County Parks & Recreation’s restored Punta Rassa Boat Ramp.

This event also signified the conclusion of the Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) Sanibel Causeway Emergency Restoration project.

The ceremony featured brief remarks from Lee County commissioners, FDOT representatives, and other officials. The boat ramp officially opened for public use at noon that day, with limited amenities including the ramp, partial docks, parking, and restrooms. Additional work was scheduled to continue at the site over the coming months.

Future improvements at the Punta Rassa Boat Ramp were reported to include the completion of dock access, a fish cleaning station, landscaping, and additional lighting. Temporary signs and buffers were put in place to ensure safety during construction. Boaters were advised to avoid the docks still under construction and to refrain from climbing on the riprap along the causeway. Lee County Parks & Recreation staff and rangers were stationed on-site to assist.

The reopening marked the first time since Hurricane Ian that boaters were able to access the Punta Rassa ramp. In partnership with FDOT, the ramp had served as a staging site for permanent causeway repairs and played a crucial role in the restoration of the main road connecting the barrier islands to the mainland.

For those unable to attend, the ceremony was available for viewing through a livestream on the county’s YouTube or Facebook channels.

The public was encouraged to follow the progress of the ramp and other related projects through the Lee County Parks Project Information Tool at www.leegov.com/parks
, which provided updates on project design, construction, and completion.

The Punta Rassa Boat Ramp is located at 15001 Punta Rassa Road, Fort Myers.

TRIM Notices: A Sneak Peek at Potential Property Tax Bills

Lee County property owners recently received their first look at potential property tax bills with the issuance of the annual Truth in Millage (TRIM) Notices for 2025 property values.

On August 18, Lee County Property Appraiser Matt Caldwell sent out these important notices, which show the assessed value of properties and give an estimate of what property owners can expect to pay in taxes this year. The TRIM notice also outlines the process for addressing concerns regarding property values or exemptions, along with relevant deadlines.

Caldwell explained that property values are based on January 1st, using data from 2024 sales, leases, and costs.

The TRIM notice comes after proposed property tax rates have been set but before the final vote by taxing authorities. While tax rates can be lowered, they cannot be increased after the TRIM notice figures are submitted.

Here’s what you’ll find on your TRIM notice:

* Current “Just Value” or Fair Market Value of your property
* Approved Exemptions
* Government Entities responsible for taxes
* Amount Owed to each entity based on your property’s value

According to Caldwell’s office, “The fair market value of your property is the amount it could sell for on the open market.” Each year, the Property Appraiser analyzes market transactions to determine this value for over 530,000 properties across Lee County, including residential, commercial, agricultural, and governmental properties.

Lee County Tax Collector Noelle Branning’s website further explains that TRIM notices are crucial as they give property owners the opportunity to ask questions or challenge the value of their property and exemptions. The notice also explains how to appeal the property’s value or any denial of exemptions.

For those wishing to dispute their TRIM notice, Caldwell recommends starting with a call to his office. “We resolve 99% of taxpayer concerns informally,” he said. “If we can’t resolve it, taxpayers have 25 days from the TRIM notice date (Aug. 18) to file a petition with the Value Adjustment Board.”

The most common exemptions include the **Homestead Exemption**, which exempts up to \$50,000 from the assessed value of a property, and the **Save Our Homes** benefit, which limits the increase in the assessed value to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) or 3%, whichever is lower.

To qualify for the Homestead Exemption, applicants must file by March 1, be bona fide Florida residents, and use the property as their permanent home on January 1.

It’s important to note that TRIM notices are **not bills**. They are informational only, and you do not need to make any payments until the official tax bill arrives in November.

As Branning’s website highlights, “Your tax bill will not match your TRIM notice” because the notice doesn’t include non-ad valorem taxes, such as stormwater or solid waste assessments. These additional assessments are included in the official tax bill.

Look out for your TRIM Notice in the mail, and be sure to review it carefully.

For more information on TRIM notices, visit [www.leepa.org](https://www.leepa.org).

You can also reach the Lee County Property Appraiser at [trim@leepa.org](mailto:trim@leepa.org) or call 239-533-6100.
