BIG ARTS on Sanibel Island is preparing for a spectacular November filled with cinematic storytelling, offering residents and visitors a diverse array of powerful documentaries. From a moving tribute to the nation’s military veterans to the highly anticipated third annual documentary festival, the cultural hub at 900 Dunlop Road is rapidly expanding its seasonal offerings. Gallery Director Wilson McCray, who oversees the film programs at BIG ARTS, recently unveiled a robust community schedule that promises to inspire, educate, and bring Southwest Florida audiences together this season.
Honoring Heroes With “Sum Function”
As the island community prepares for the upcoming Sanibel Veterans Day ceremony, BIG ARTS is proud to honor the holiday with a special screening of the documentary Sum Function. Scheduled for Thursday, November 12, 2026, at 7:00 p.m., the film offers a profound and emotional look into the lives of wounded service members.
Directed by Noah Currier, Sum Function chronicles the inspiring journey of the nation’s all-veteran wheelchair rugby team. “The film itself, I have to say, is completely moving and inspirational,” McCray shared. “One of the reasons I love it is because of what they have done creating this foundation. He created something really special. We have not had a stellar history of supporting our veterans in this country.”
The documentary showcases how Currier brought these veterans together, forging a community and a unique sporting event where they became both a team and a family. It highlights the collective strength they gave each other to continue the battle to live and recover. To make the evening even more impactful, director Noah Currier will personally be in attendance. As a gesture of gratitude to those who served, veterans who purchase a ticket to the film will receive a complimentary second ticket by calling the Box Office at 239-395-0900.
The Expanding BIG ARTS 2026 Documentary Film Festival
The cinematic celebration continues the following week with the BIG ARTS 2026 Documentary Film Festival. What began two years ago as a small concept to celebrate a single filmmaker’s work has organically grown into a premier three-day cultural event.
This year’s festival specifically spotlights the work of accomplished documentary filmmakers Justin Schein and his wife, Eden Wurmfeld. The Schein family shares a deep, historic bond with BIG ARTS; Justin’s father generously donated the resources to build Schein Hall, the organization’s former theater prior to the construction of the new building, while his mother, Joy, taught numerous dance classes at the facility. After successfully screening Schein’s Death & Taxes last year, the festival has officially widened its scope to three days, featuring five brilliant films that tackle critical social issues.
