The island community is invited to gather and pay tribute to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces during the annual Sanibel Veterans Day ceremony. Scheduled for Wednesday, November 11, 2026, the patriotic event will commence promptly at 11:00 a.m. at the Sanibel City Hall flagpole, located at 800 Dunlop Road. Serving as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by military personnel, this event offers residents and visitors along Florida’s Gulf coast a dedicated moment to reflect, honor, and express their gratitude to the men and women who have defended the nation.
A Legacy of Small-Town Patriotism
The tradition of the Sanibel Veterans Day ceremony runs deep within the community, with the island’s first official observance dating back to 1989. For the past 12 years, the event has been passionately organized and emceed by Fred Bondurant, a dedicated member of the American Legion who served in the United States Air Force and National Guard for 23 years. Alongside his wife Mary, who also served a decade in the Air Force, the couple has worked tirelessly to ensure the gathering retains its intimate, neighborly atmosphere.
“We try to make it as much of a small-town community event as we can,” Fred explained. “One percent of Americans actually serve in the military, so it is nice to recognize those who answer the call. Veterans Day honors all veterans, while Memorial Day is to honor the veterans that passed.”
Collaborative Community Involvement
The success of the ceremony relies heavily on the collaborative spirit of local civic organizations and island youth. The Sanibel Police Department and the Sanibel Fire & Rescue District will work alongside local Boy Scouts to formally raise the flag, while the Scouts will also distribute complimentary cool water generously provided by Billy’s Bikes.
Patriotic musical accompaniments will be provided by the BIG ARTS Concert Band, setting a reflective tone for the morning. Highlighting the involvement of the island’s younger generation, the Junior National Honor Society will lead the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance, and students from The Sanibel School chorus will perform a selection of moving patriotic songs. Behind the scenes, City of Sanibel Recreation Director Andrea Miller and the Public Works department are providing vital logistical support to set up tents, chairs, and staging.
Voices of Resilience and Gratitude
This year’s keynote speaker is Sanibel Fire & Rescue District Deputy Chief John DiMaria, who previously served eight years in the United States Navy. DiMaria draws a profound parallel between the dedication of military veterans and the resilience demonstrated by the island community following recent devastating hurricane seasons.
“It’s an honor to be part of the ceremony. Service runs through my family, and Veterans Day is about the people who made a promise to this country without knowing what it would cost them,” DiMaria stated. “I’ve seen this community at its hardest moment, and I’ve seen it come back stronger. That kind of resilience doesn’t come from nowhere. It comes from people who believe in serving something bigger than themselves, and nobody has shown us that better than our veterans.”
Following DiMaria’s remarks, the Rev. Dr. Sally Haynes of the Sanibel Congregational United Church of Christ will deliver this year’s invocation, continuing Fred Bondurant’s tradition of inviting a different local clergy member to lead the prayer each year.
The Meaningful Veteran’s Remembrance
For many attendees, the most impactful segment of the morning is the “Veteran’s Remembrance.” During this open-mic portion of the ceremony, members of the audience are invited to step forward and share personal stories about their own military service, or speak in honor of a parent, relative, or friend who served.
Mary Bondurant noted that these unscripted moments are the heart of the event. “Maybe it’s a fun story, maybe a war story, maybe the camaraderie they experienced,” she shared. “We still have some Korean War veterans that attend. We have lost so many of our WWII veterans. It’s a moment that is a big reflection to what our country has done and the people in our community that have served.”
The ceremony will conclude with the playing of the Armed Forces medley, providing veterans from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard a proud moment to stand and be recognized by their island neighbors when their respective branch’s song is played. It is a powerful, unifying conclusion that perfectly captures the enduring gratitude of the Southwest Florida community.
