The City of Sanibel received the following update from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) regarding the completion of roadwork on the Sanibel Causeway:
Sanibel Causeway Back in Business: All Lanes Open!
Good news, Sanibel! As of January 5th, ALL TRAVEL LANES on the Sanibel Causeway are officially open to traffic. We know navigating the island has been a challenge since Hurricane Ian, so we’re thrilled to report this major milestone in the restoration process.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Permanent lanes: You can now ditch the detour and cruise along the newly restored permanent lanes. Remember, though, the speed limit is still reduced to 20 MPH for everyone’s safety.
- Westbound merge: Pay attention – the westbound merge lane is now located west of the toll plaza. Be cautious and extra patient.
- Ongoing work: Don’t be surprised if you see crews and equipment buzzing around – they’re still removing debris and materials from the temporary lanes.
Island recovery: Many oversized vehicles are crossing the causeway to assist with recovery efforts on the island. Please be patient as travel may be slower than usual. Bicyclists are encouraged to utilize another mode of transportation to travel the causeway and pedestrians are not permitted on the Sanibel Causeway.
MOTORISTS ARE REMINDED TO OBEY THE POSTED SPEED LIMIT OF 20 MPH. Please use caution and watch for workers and construction vehicles entering and leaving the roadway.
