A vibrant array of hands-on fine craft programs designed to unlock young artistic potential is officially hitting the calendar on the barrier islands. Registration is officially open for the highly anticipated BIG ARTS summer youth camps.
Staged at the organization’s state-of-the-art cultural campus at 900 Dunlop Road on Sanibel, the summer sessions provide immersive, studio-based educational environments. Led by celebrated local instructors, these specialized weekly blocks allow children to explore tactile mediums like fused glass, raw clay, dimensional painting, and mixed media in a highly encouraging and collaborative social setting.
Exceptional Features of the BIG ARTS Summer Youth Camps
The primary philosophy guiding the BIG ARTS summer youth camps focuses on turning raw curiosity into tangible, kiln-fired masterpieces. By focusing on small-group dynamics and professional studio techniques, the programs ensure that every child can confidently command their own creative stage.
Supported by the Kiwanis Club of Sanibel & Captiva, the initial wave of specialized workshops launching in late June features two distinct tracks operating simultaneously. Both courses run from June 22 through June 26, culminating in a live community showcase for friends and families.
-
Glass Mosaics and More (10:00 a.m. to Noon): Under the direct guidance of master glass artisan Petra Kaiser, campers aged 10 to 14 will dive into the delicate mechanics of fused glass. Students will piece together functional architectural items, including custom wind chimes, decorative dishes, statement jewelry, and wall hangings. Once assembled, the projects will be fired off-site in a high-temperature kiln. Campers will spend the second half of the week assembling two to three intricate 3-by-3-inch mini mosaics.
-
Bring Out Your Inner Picasso (10:00 a.m. to Noon): Designed for youths entering grades 4–6 (ages 9 to 12), this high-texture pottery camp is led by instructor Dana Nicloy. Students will research the abstract, avant-garde styles of Pablo Picasso to construct colorful clay masks. Utilizing the classical “slab” pottery method, campers roll flat clay foundations before mastering advanced binding techniques like scratch-and-slip, stamping, and coils to anchor eyes, noses, and mouths. After applying professional liquid glazes and navigating the kiln-firing process, the children will complete their pieces with unique mixed-media appliques and embellishments.
To honor the hard work of the young creators, both tracks will host a synchronized, public Student Art Show on the final Friday, June 26, starting promptly at 11:00 a.m.. Parents, neighbors, and seasonal visitors near the Gulf are invited to tour the studio spaces to celebrate these finished gallery assets.
Tiered Structural Pricing and Simple Account Enrollment
To maintain consistent access for the island’s diverse community base, BIG ARTS handles camp tuitions through a structured, tiered pricing framework. Active donors and members can register a child for $100 per week, while the non-donor enrollment fee is set at $125 per week for either track. This fee structure directly covers all premium raw components, specialized tools, glaze inventories, and professional kiln-firing services required throughout the week.
Because individual class caps are strictly enforced to preserve a safe, attentive instructor-to-camper ratio within the pottery and glass studios, early digital enrollment is highly recommended. Families can review health safety waivers, check real-time seat availability, and process credit card tuitions directly by visiting the primary parent interface at the BIG ARTS Youth Classes Portal.
Driving Long-Term Cultural Stabilization
By introducing young minds to complex structural art mediums like glass fusion and slab-built ceramics, these targeted BIG ARTS summer youth camps play a central role in preserving the historic identity of the islands. Nurturing early artistic discovery ensures that the next generation grows up with a deep appreciation for independent creative expression, visual communication, and local community collaboration.
