Re-Greening the Gateway: Causeway Boulevard Native Planting Project to Begin

Sanibel’s primary entry corridor is getting a major, eco-conscious makeover. The City of Sanibel has announced that the Causeway Boulevard Planting Project is officially scheduled to break ground on July 6, 2026. This highly visible initiative will restore lush, native greenery to the island’s main entrance over a three-to-four-week construction timeline.

At the LeAneSuarezGroup, we know that first impressions are everything. Restoring the natural canopy of our gateway corridor not only highlights Sanibel’s identity as a sanctuary island, but it also helps rebuild the signature tropical aesthetic that drives long-term value for our local real estate market.

In a nutshell: Spearheaded by the citizen-led initiative Roots in Resilience, a major landscaping project will install highly hurricane-resilient native trees, shrubs, and groundcovers from the edge of the causeway up to the four-way stop.

The Scope: Designing for Hurricane Resilience

The project stretches along the entire entry corridor of Causeway Boulevard, serving as a welcoming sight for returning residents and vacationers. Following the severe impacts of the 2022 and 2024 hurricane seasons, selecting the right flora was paramount.

Every single plant chosen for this corridor was selected based on a strict criteria of survival. The team focused exclusively on native species that demonstrated elite biological resilience when subjected to extreme hurricane-force winds and heavy salt-water storm surges.

About Roots in Resilience

The driving force behind this project is Roots in Resilience, a specialized community collective formed after recent storms decimated the island’s native tree populations. Initiated by Sanibel Vice Mayor John Henshaw, the group bridges the gap between public policy and private citizen action. The board features a powerhouse alliance of local representatives, including:

  • Active island residents

  • City of Sanibel staff

  • The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF)

  • The Charitable Foundation of the Islands (CFI)

  • The SanCap Chamber

  • Coastal Vista Design

Following Hurricane Ian, the city collaborated directly with FEMA’s Community Assistance program to evaluate the island’s main thoroughfares. Because Causeway Boulevard serves as the literal gateway to the island, it was chosen as the group’s very first localized target area.

Funding and Public Contacts

This environmental restoration is powered by a blended funding model. Capital was raised through private donations made to Roots in Resilience, city budget allocations, and a prestigious federal grant awarded by the U.S. Forest Service. This grant was secured in partnership with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services via the Urban and Community Forestry — Hurricane Ian Recovery Grant Program.

If you have technical questions regarding the upcoming traffic flow adjustments, planting zones, or species selection, you can reach out directly to Natural Resources Department environmental biologist Dana Dettmar at dana.dettmar@mysanibel.com. To learn more about future thoroughfare phases or to make a tax-deductible donation toward the island’s reforestation, visit the official Roots in Resilience Portal.
