Sanibel Island’s environmental research infrastructure is taking a major leap forward. The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) has announced substantial construction milestones on the La Gorce Family Intern Village since breaking ground on May 4.
Spearheaded by commercial builder Stevens Construction, the purpose-built residential campus is designed to solve a critical barrier island need: providing secure, storm-resilient housing for the seasonal scientists, interns, and wildlife rehabilitators who safeguard our local ecosystems.

Construction Milestones: From Groundwork to Vertical Rise
Since preliminary site preparation began, field crews have made rapid headway across civil and structural phases:

Civil Infrastructure & Site Prep: Ground grading and building pads are fully prepared. Crucial underground utility conduits for LCEC (electric) and Comcast have been laid, alongside the placement of driveway subgrade and baserock layers.

Foundations & Structural Shells: Vertical construction is in full swing. Foundation slabs for Buildings #1 and #2 have been poured, the elevator pit slab and walls are finished, and shear walls for Building #1 are complete.

Next Phases: Foundation excavation for Building #3 is underway as the multi-structure campus takes shape.

A Resilient Tri Organization Conservation Hub
Designed specifically to withstand coastal storms and flooding, the modern 30-bed facility will serve as a shared residence for seasonal interns across three premier island conservation institutions:

Target Completion Ahead of Nesting Season
