A beloved piece of Sanibel Island lodging history has officially been reborn with modern coastal elegance and storm resilience. Following a complete post-Hurricane Ian teardown and ground-up reconstruction of the historic Beachview Cottages, the brand-new Beachview Villas celebrated its official renaissance with an August 5 ribbon-cutting hosted by the SanCap Chamber.
The boutique Gulf-front resort originally welcomed its first guests on May 21, but the August ceremony formally commemorated the restoration of one of the island’s most enduring vacation destinations.
At the LeAneSuarezGroup, we view the return of premier beachfront accommodations as a vital economic engine for Sanibel. Rebuilding iconic properties to the highest modern building codes protects neighborhood character, drives tourism commerce, and elevates real estate desirability across the coveted West Gulf Drive corridor.
“What a victory this achieves. Another of our prime beach properties has returned, built to the highest standards of resiliency and refined lodging.”
— John Lai, President and CEO of the SanCap Chamber
Seven Decades of History: From 1950s Cottages to Modern Luxury
First built in the early 1950s—long before the Sanibel Causeway connected the island to the mainland in 1963—the property has welcomed generations of beachcombers and shell enthusiasts. Sanibel Captiva Beach Resorts (SCBR) has owned and operated the Gulf-front parcel since 1979 under the leadership of President and Chairman of the Board Tony Lapi.
While the total unit density remains at 22 keys, the property’s layout and accommodation styles have been completely transformed:
BEACHVIEW VILLAS UNIT CONFIGURATION
[ JUNIOR SUITES ] ──► 10 Refined, coastal-appointed units
[ 1-BEDROOM SUITES ] ──► 11 Spacious suites with luxury finishes
[ THE "JUNONIA" SUITE ]──► 1 Signature 4-Bedroom / 4-Bath beachfront retreat
with private lounge, game area & full chef's kitchen
“There are 10 junior suites, 11 one-bedroom suites, and the Junonia — a four-bedroom, four-bath unit with a game/lounging area and full kitchen. There is really nothing like it on Sanibel sitting directly on the Gulf.”
— Tony Lapi, President & Chairman of the Board, Sanibel Captiva Beach Resorts
Economic Impact: Accommodations Fueling Island Businesses
The reopening of Beachview Villas adds critical lodging capacity back into Sanibel’s hospitality ecosystem. As overnight visitors return, local restaurants, bike rentals, retail shops, and charter captains directly benefit from increased foot traffic.
HOSPITALITY MULTIPLIER EFFECT
[ RESILIENT LODGING ] ──► Restores 22 luxury beachfront suites on West Gulf Dr.
[ VISITOR SPENDING ] ──► Fuels local dining, ecotours, boutiques & attractions.
[ RISING TIDE ] ──► "More units coming online creates a rising tide that floats all boats."
“Our chamber of commerce has done an outstanding job supporting all the hospitality accommodation businesses. They clearly understand that without accommodations, other businesses would suffer.”
— Tony Lapi
