Tax Relief in the Sunshine State: The Ultimate Guide to Florida’s Two Major 2026 Sales Tax Holidays

Living in Florida comes with phenomenal lifestyle perks, from pristine beaches to unmatched outdoor recreation. But as inflation impacts families across the country, saving money on everyday essentials has become a top priority for local consumers.

To help offset rising costs, the Florida Legislature passed a sweeping legislative relief package (House Bill 7031E) modifying and creating key tax exemptions. The headline news for shoppers? Florida is running two distinct, heavy-hitting sales tax holidays.

At the LeAneSuarezGroup, we track these structural savings closely. Whether you are budgeting to send your kids back to local classrooms or stocking up on hunting and fishing supplies to explore our coastal estuaries, knowing the exact timelines and product limits ensures you get the absolute most out of your budget.

Holiday 1: The Revamped “Back-to-School” Sales Tax Holiday

In a major scheduling shift, the state altered the timing of this classic tax holiday to better line up with actual school start dates. The traditional window has moved forward into July, giving families a full month to shop without state sales tax applied to core education essentials.

  • The Timeline: Monday, July 20, 2026, through Thursday, August 20, 2026.

                    BACK-TO-SCHOOL TAX-FREE THRESHOLDS

[ COMPUTERS ] ──► Laptops, tablets, & accessories up to $1,500 (Personal use only)
[ CLOTHING ] ──► Apparel, shoes, backpacks, & fanny packs up to $100 per item
[ CLASS SUPPLIES ] ──► Standard school supplies up to $50 per item
[ LEARNING AIDS ] ──► Flashcards, puzzle games, & learning toys up to $30

(Note: General retail items like jewelry, luggage, or electronics primarily designed for gaming or cell service are completely excluded from the holiday savings).

Holiday 2: The 4-Month “Hunting, Fishing & Camping” Sales Tax Holiday

In honor of the historic 250th anniversary of the United States, state leaders are putting a major spotlight on Florida’s constitutional outdoor heritage. The state is launching a massive, four-month-long tax exemption window tailored for sportsmen, boaters, and backcountry explorers.

  • The Timeline: Tuesday, September 1, 2026, through Thursday, December 31, 2026.

This lengthy campaign completely eliminates state sales tax on a vast inventory of outdoor recreation tools and safety gear. To plan your fall shopping trips, review the specific category caps built into the law:

Tax-Free Hunting Supplies

  • Firearms & Bows: No state sales tax applies to retail purchases of pistols, rifles, shotguns, traditional bows, and crossbows.

  • Ammunition & Equipment: Includes ammunition boxes, hunting cases, cleaning kits, holsters, optics, and archery accessories (arrows, quivers, and targets).

Tax-Free Camping & Fishing Gear

  • Tents & Shelters: Tax-exempt up to $200 per item.

  • Rods & Reels: Tax-exempt up to $75 individually (or up to $150 if purchased together as a pre-packaged rod/reel combo set).

  • Stoves, Chairs & Bedding: Camping stoves, collapsible tailgating chairs, portable hammocks, and sleeping bags are tax-free up to $50 per item.

  • Flashlights & Tackle Storage: High-powered flashlights, camping lanterns, tackle boxes, and specialized tackle bags are tax-free up to $30.

  • Bait & Small Tackle: Individual fishing hooks, lures, sinkers, and bait are tax-exempt up to $10 per item (or up to $20 if sold as a multi-pack set).

                 FALL OUTDOOR SUPPLY EXEMPTION SLOTS

  [ TENTS ] ──► 100% Tax-Free up to $200 per item
  [ RODS & REELS ] ──► 100% Tax-Free up to $75 individually / $150 per combo set
  [ STOVES & CHAIRS ]──► 100% Tax-Free up to $50 per item
  [ LIGHTS & BOXES ] ──► 100% Tax-Free up to $30 per item

Pro-Tips for Savvy Florida Shoppers

To get the most out of your holiday purchases, keep these important transactional guidelines in mind:

  1. Online Purchases Count: Eligible items bought through online e-commerce platforms or remote marketplace sellers qualify for the tax-exempt status, provided the order is officially placed and accepted by the merchant during the designated holiday windows.

  2. Beware the Theme Park Loophole: Tax exemptions are not recognized if you purchase qualifying items inside theme parks, major entertainment complexes, commercial airports, or public lodging hotels.

  3. Watch the Multi-Item Sets: If a tax-exempt item is packaged together by a manufacturer with a taxable accessory as a single product unit, sales tax must be calculated on the total price of the entire set.

Whether you are hitting the local department stores in late July or stocking up on marine tackle this fall, enjoy the extra savings as you keep more hard-earned money in your wallet this year!
