Sanibel Launches CivicPlus Portal for Special Event Permits & Facility Rentals

Planning a community gathering, scheduling a business sidewalk sale, or renting a public space on Sanibel Island just got significantly simpler. The City of Sanibel has officially launched a new online special event permit and city facility reservation system, modernizing administrative workflows for residents, business owners, and local community groups.

The new digital portal utilizes CivicPlus Process Automation and Digital Services (PADS) to replace traditional, paper-based application routines. For the island community, this update translates directly into enhanced accessibility, real-time application transparency, and a drastically accelerated review timeline for both applicants and municipal staff.

At the LeAneSuarezGroup, we view this infrastructure upgrade as a highly positive advancement. Streamlined, user-friendly digital municipal platforms make managing a business or coordinating neighborhood associations on the islands far more efficient, immediately boosting the day-to-day lifestyle value for our residential property owners.

“We are excited to provide residents, organizations and businesses with a more accessible and transparent permitting and reservation process.”

— Andrea Miller, Sanibel Recreation Department Director

Key Features of the New CivicPlus Portal

The new automated system provides an end-to-end digital pipeline designed to take the friction out of traditional permit routing:

  • No Account Required Access: In a major win for user convenience, applicants are not forced to register or create an account profile simply to start a new form, allowing quick entry for visitors and residents alike.

  • Real-Time Status Tracking: Users can upload all required supporting documents directly to the cloud and track their project’s progress through real-time email notifications and updates.

  • Direct Department Communication: The interface includes native messaging features, allowing event hosts to chat directly with reviewing city officials if adjustments or clarifications are needed.

  • Digital Placard Delivery: Once an application clears review, approved users immediately receive digital event placards and authorized rental documents straight to their inboxes.

Supported Permits & Reservations

The CivicPlus software consolidates several major recreational and commercial applications under a single digital hub. Make sure to leverage the platform if you are coordinating any of the following activities on the island:

Application Category Target Use Case Key Timeline/Policy Requirements
Special Event Permits Large community festivals, beach weddings, non-profit fundraisers. Must be submitted at least 60 days prior to the event; carries a $50 resident / $150 non-resident fee.
Annual Sidewalk Sale Permits Commercial retail sidewalk sales for licensed island businesses. Valid for designated annual calendar holidays (e.g., Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Fourth of July).
City Facility Rentals Booking city parks, public pavilions, or historic civic venues. Subject to specific tier deposits based on overall participant headcounts.
Recreation Center Room Rentals Securing indoor meeting rooms or activity spaces at the main rec complex. Hourly rates apply; bookings route directly through Recreation staff.
