If you are planning to head down to Periwinkle Way to catch the vibrant floats or navigate the island on the Fourth of July, you will want to adjust your travel timelines. The City of Sanibel has announced official road closures and vehicle detours to accommodate the thousands of spectators and participants gathering for the Annual Independence Day Parade.
At the LeAneSuarezGroup, we want to ensure your holiday weekend is smooth, safe, and stress-free. Knowing exactly when the island’s main artery shuts down allows you to easily secure prime parade seating or reach your destination without getting caught in holiday gridlock.
In a nutshell: Periwinkle Way will experience a complete closure from Donax Street to Tarpon Bay Road on July 4, starting at 9:00 AM. A bypass routing system will direct traffic along the Gulf-side corridors until the parade successfully concludes around noon.
Closure Times & Mandatory Detour Routes
The official closure window is tightly coordinated to prioritize pedestrian and parade safety:
-
The Closure: Periwinkle Way will be entirely blocked off to standard vehicle traffic between Donax Street and Tarpon Bay Road. The restrictions take effect promptly at 9:00 AM and will remain in place until approximately noon.
-
The Reopening: The city confirms that roads will be reopened to regular traffic flow immediately following the official end of the parade procession.
-
The Detour: Motorists traveling across the island after 9:00 AM will be routed away from the Periwinkle corridor at Donax Street. Drivers will be systematically detoured across the following southern loops to bypass the parade grounds:
-
East Gulf Drive
-
Middle Gulf Drive
-
West Gulf Drive
-
Rabbit Road
-

Handicap Parking & Police Safety Reminders
To ensure the parade remains accessible to all community members, a limited pool of handicap parking spaces will be available for utilization at the Sanibel Community Park, located at 2231 Periwinkle Way. However, because this lot sits directly inside the active parade zone, vehicles must arrive and park before the 9:00 AM hard cutoff when Periwinkle snaps shut.
Motorists are strongly urged to either complete their island travel before the holiday rush or plan alternative routes entirely.
“Sanibel Police Chief Dalton reminds Sanibel motorists to be especially alert for parade floats, pedestrians and cyclists in the area of the parade and to expect delays.” — City of Sanibel Municipal Update
For real-time traffic condition updates, parking parameters, or localized safety inquiries, you can reach the Sanibel Police Department directly at their non-emergency administrative line: 239-472-3111. Stay alert, drive slow, and have a fantastic, safe Independence Day out on the islands!
