Protecting barrier island wildlife requires consistent, data-driven monitoring. On August 26, 2026, the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) Coastal Wildlife team officially released its monthly Coastal Wildlife Tracker for August, providing vital mid-season updates on sea turtle and shorebird nesting activity across Sanibel and Captiva.
As part of SCCF’s commitment to community transparency and conservation science, these trackers are released on the last Wednesday of each month through October.
At the LeAneSuarezGroup, we believe that Sanibel and Captiva’s environmental stewardship directly protects our sanctuary island lifestyle. Monitoring local wildlife health not only preserves our natural ecosystems but also sustains the long-term desirability and property values of our barrier island communities.
Seasonal Monitoring Timeline: What Lies Ahead
![]()
While monthly trackers offer real-time snapshots of nesting progress, full scientific analysis requires broader historical context.
The official sea turtle nesting season concludes on October 31. Following season close, SCCF researchers spend several weeks compiling comprehensive data, assessing hatchling emergence rates, evaluate predator impacts, and comparing multi-year historical baselines. In December 2026, SCCF will publish a definitive final tracker featuring comprehensive multi-year trend analysis.

How the Community Can Help: Essential Wildlife Guidelines
Residents, seasonal homeowners, and beachgoers play a direct role in ensuring nesting sea turtles and shorebirds complete their reproductive cycles safely:
-
Practice “Lights Out”: Beachfront interior and exterior lighting must be turned off or shielded with turtle-friendly fixtures after dark to prevent disorienting nesting turtles and emerging hatchlings.
-
Keep Beaches Clean & Flat: Remove all beach furniture, umbrellas, tents, and trash each evening; always fill in holes and flatten sandcastles before leaving the beach.
-
Give Wildlife Distance: Never approach, shine flashlights on, or take flash photography of nesting sea turtles or shorebirds.
-
Respect Marked Zones: Keep clear of marked shorebird nesting areas and wire nest screens protecting sea turtle eggs.
