One of Southwest Florida’s most celebrated fine dining destinations has marked an emotional and triumphant milestone. On August 6, 2026, Sweet Melissa’s Restaurant hosted a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony in partnership with the Greater Fort Myers and Sanibel-Captiva Chamber of Commerce, officially celebrating its successful relocation from Sanibel Island to south Fort Myers.
For over a decade, Sweet Melissa’s was a beloved culinary cornerstone on Periwinkle Way before its original building was destroyed by Hurricane Ian in September 2022. Reopening along the Summerlin Road corridor in Fort Myers, owner and Executive Chef Melissa Donahue has brought back her signature ingredient-forward, farm-to-table dining experience to the delight of loyal islanders and mainland food enthusiasts alike.
At the LeAneSuarezGroup, we know that premier dining is central to the coastal lifestyle that defines our barrier islands and nearby mainland enclaves. Seeing an iconic Sanibel culinary brand re-establish its roots and thrive reinforces the enduring spirit and commercial vitality of our Southwest Florida community.
“Sanibel is where this all started, and losing that building was like losing a piece of our family. Reopening in Fort Myers wasn’t something we did alone — our guests followed us here, our team stayed with us, and this community made room for us. Cutting this ribbon isn’t just about a restaurant opening its doors. It’s about everyone who helped us get back on our feet.”
— Chef Melissa Donahue, Owner & Executive Chef
The Ceremony & Community Celebration
The ceremonial event welcomed regional civic leaders, chamber partners, and loyal patrons to experience the chef-driven venue firsthand.
The program featured keynote remarks from John Lai, President and CEO of the Greater Fort Myers and Sanibel-Captiva Chamber of Commerce, and Nancy Macphee, Destination Development Manager of the Lee County Visitor & Convention Bureau, alongside Chef Donahue and Executive Sous Chef Thomas Juneau. Attendees were treated to a selection of seasonal bites reflecting the restaurant’s farm-to-table ethos prior to the official ribbon cut.

The remarkable thing about this region isn’t that we got hit. It’s that businesses like this one found a way to come back. Melissa’s return is a reminder of what Southwest Florida is made of.”
